Useful information for companies and employees

Gift employees up to €1,500 tax free

From 1 January 2025, you can give employees up to five small benefits, tax-free, each year. These benefits must not be in cash and the combined value of the five benefits cannot exceed €1,500. If more than five benefits are given in a year, only the first five benefits may qualify for the tax exemption. Unused allowance amounts cannot be carried over.

Flat rate expenses (FRE) allowances

Employees may be able to claim Flat Rate Expenses and therefore pay less tax in their job. FRE allowances are available for a wide range of employment categories. The amount of the deduction is agreed between Revenue and representatives of groups or classes of employees (usually trade union officials). All employees of the class or group in question can then, where appropriate, claim the agreed deduction.

Meal allowance (Subsistence allowance)

Employees can claim a tax free daily Subsistence allowance if they meet certain criteria:
The assignment must be outside eight kilometres of the employee's home and normal place of work.
The time away has to be more than five hours. If it is more than ten hours then there is a higher day rate.

Site-Based Employee allowance

Site-based employees do not have a fixed base and perform their work duties at different locations. These duties generally last for periods longer than one day.
In order to qualify for these expenses, the employee must be:
Working at a site 32km (20 miles) or more from your base or
Working 32km or more from the General Post Office (GPO), if the employee is Dublin based.

Dependant relative tax credit

You may claim this credit if you maintain a relative at your own expense. You can claim for your relative, or a relative of your spouse or civil partner.
Maintaining a relative at your own expense means meeting the costs of everyday living. You must substantially maintain your relative where they cannot maintain themselves. It is not necessary that the care/aid you provide be full-time or that they live with you.

Remote working relief

An employer can make a payment of €3.20 per workday to a remote working employee without deducting tax if:
  • there is an agreement between you and your employee that the employee works from home
  • your employee performs substantive duties of the employment at home
  • and
  • your employee performs their duties for substantial periods at home
